At Training Route 3 (TR3), an area of expertise is customizing learning tools such as handouts and worksheets to help support the learning experience for our facilitators and learners.
Problem Based Learning (PBL): Key Points
Handout(In depth)This “Problem Based Learning: Key Points” handout is designed to provide instructors withmore in depth information about the Problem Based Learning (PBL) methodology. Topics on the handout include a description of PBL, the difference between problem solving and troubleshooting, key components of PBL, criteria for developing PBL scenarios and the benefits of incorporating the Problem Based Learning teaching methodology within the classroom. |
Problem Based Learning (PBL): Overview
Overview Handout(Diagram and bullet points)This “Problem Based Learning: Overview” handout is designed to provide instructors and students with an overview of Key PBL elements using a visual diagram and bullet point descriptions to explain various concepts and benefits. |
Problem Based Learning (PBL): 10 Step Process Check List
“10 Step Process”(Student checklist worksheet)This “Problem Based Learning: 10 Step Process Check List” is a worksheet designed to guide the student through the basic PBL 10 Step process. Starting from analyzing the scenario or problem situation to gathering the information they need to know individually and in teams, and finally describing their process by presenting various solution(s) to the problem in the form of a class presentation. |
Problem Based Learning (PBL): Need To Know
“Need to Know”(Student worksheet)This “Problem Based Learning: Need to Know” worksheet is designed to guide students through an investigative process in order to explore what the team already knows, what it needs to know, and where to obtain more information. We recommend that students fill out this worksheet in teams right after they are introduced to the problem scenario and that they update it several times throughout the PBL learning process. This will help students gather pertinent information, conduct independent research and practice problem solving in groups. |
Performance Indicator (PBL): Performance Indicator Brainstorm Sheet
Brainstorm (Instructor worksheet)Performance indicators help measure student performance outcomes and products comparable to measuring deliverables performed on a job site. They can also help measure student progress in developing problem solving skills. PBL uncovers a range of solutions (not just one solution) within a range of constraints (feasibility, practicality, time, etc.). The PBL learning process allows students to problem-solve and look for solutions that may be outside the original scope of the problem. This worksheet will help you create performance indicators to measure student performance for both project deliverables and the problem solving process. We recommend you fill out this worksheet before developing a performance indicator rubric (see separate worksheet) to assess student performance for your scenario. |
Performance Indicator (PBL): Performance Indicator Rubric
Rubric(Instructor worksheet)Use this worksheet to create a student evaluation rubric tailored to your PBL scenario. The rubric lists suggested performance indicators specific to the problem-based learning process (Need to Know process, and open-ended problem-solving) and provides space to create performance indicators specific to other skill areas practiced in your PBL: research skills, technical skills, team work, oral presentation skills, quality of written product, project management skills, or other skill areas. Filling out the Performance Indicator Worksheet first will help you identify the areas of student performance you may want to assess with the help of this rubric. |
