INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN LEARNING TOOL: HANDOUT

Sector: Green Business / Sustainability

Example: This Instructional Design approach uses the Law of Proximity, which uses visual icons to help reinforce concepts and ideas. The images play a vital role, since objects and text near each other are seen as a unit. This approach of Gestalt psychology has been linked to cognitive retention, such as thinking and memory.

BEFORE: Sample piece of text-based content

Here are some tips on how to adopt the four primary green strategies into your life. Here are four green living strategies that you can implement in a variety of way to contribute to the solutions that the planet needs. Reduce Consumption, which is anything that you do to decrease the amount of the Earth’s resources that you use-from choosing goods with less packaging to turning down your home’s thermostat a few degrees in the winter-helps you to lead a more sustainable life. Choose carefully, which means thinking about a product’s entire life cycle-from manufacturing to disposal-helps to protect not only the environment but also the people involved in the manufacturing process. Opt for renewable resources, means replacing your use of nonrenewable resources (such as energy based fossil fuels) with renewable resources (such as solar or wind energy) is a very powerful green action. Finally, repair when needed is a philosophy where you are brainstorming ways you can help to fix the damage that’s already been done to the environment, from supporting tree planting to helping out with community programs at home and around the world.”

AFTER: Instructional Design

Here is an example of translating a text-based “sample piece of content” into an engaging Learning Tool & Handout, focusing on key points and concepts. These learning strategies can be applied to various industries, sectors, and target audiences. The more ways you can connect the learner to the content the higher probability of retention and application of knowledge.

Target Audience: Middle School / Youth

INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN LEARNING TOOL: WORKBOOK

Sector: Laney Community College, Environmental Controls and Technology Program

Course Curriculum: Direct Digital Controls

Problem Based Learning Scenario Title: "Why is the Light on?"

Course Concept: Troubleshooting at the laser laboratory control system, by determining the sequence of operation and the unknown cause of the light being on in the University of California, Berkeley, laser laboratory.

Example: This Instructional Design approach is focused around the Problem Based Learning model. Problem Based Learning requires that students draw from many different sources and disciplines. The curriculum course objectives are identified, but how the learner arrives to the outcome is not predetermined. The goal of Problem Based Learning is to promote critical thinking, team work, and integration of real life scenarios.

The workbook contains worksheets, diagrams, evaluation forms, sample blue prints, and photographs.
